Academic Integrity

Updated: Nov 14, 2021

Writing academic papers, either for high school or college, comes in a package with academic integrity when writing it. There are three things involved in cleaving to academic integrity, which are intellectual honesty, legal reason and credibility weight.

But before we get down to the list, do not forget to like ❤️👍 this post and subscribe 🔔 as this will help the channel grow! Also, feel free to share this link with anyone who might also struggle with academic papers. With that being said, let's check these types out!

1. Intellectual honesty

We are living in 2021 now, and let's face it, our history has been written long before we were born. Many great ideas that swirl around our daily life were originated by amazing thinkers in the past. When we state something smart, most of the time the thought is not due to our own brilliant brain, but it is because we have learned something from someone who had lived earlier before we do. Citing means we are trying to be intellectually honest, as we state the owner of the idea and not taking all the credits for ourselves.

You would not like your co-worker going up to your boss with the idea you pitched to him just this morning and taking all the credit, so why should you do that to someone else? As the famous quote says, honesty is the best policy, and citing is one of the ways we can be honest in our writings (Audience Advantage, 2018).

2. Legal reason

There is a legal framework that people can use against you when you steal their ideas. Keep in mind that someone can sue you when you plagiarize, so keep on the safe side and cite your sources.

When to cite, then? Basically, it is:

  • When you use an exact quote

  • When you restate or paraphrase an idea from a resource

  • When you summarize a work

All sources you use should be included in (Citation) within the paragraph as well as the References or Works Cited or Bibliography page by the end of the academic writing (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, 2021).

One of the citation style is APA, and this is the core components of an APA reference according to Mendeley.

3. Credibility weight

Let’s be honest, which quote on economics would you take more serious: the one by your neighbour or the one by Warren Buffet? Warren Buffet of course. Why? Because he has more credibility or so-called an expert in the field of economy. A point can be made much stronger when it is backed by opinion leaders or experts within that field of expertise (Audience Advantage, 2018).

To sum it up, academic integrity is important to secure your path towards clean and honest education. It is not easy, but it is not that hard. I hope this can encourage you to adhere to academic integrity and cite your papers properly! 📚 ✍️
